UGA has had two benefactors named George Peabody—George Foster Peabody, after whom the Peabody Awards are named, and an earlier George Peabody, a New England merchant who made a fortune in trans-Atlantic trade. He died in 1869, directing in his will that his estate be distributed over a period of time to promote public education in the South.
Located on East Campus, the Performing and Visual Arts Complex includes the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, the Georgia Museum of Art, the Performing Arts Center and the Lamar Dodd School of Art.
