UGA has had two benefactors named George Peabody—George Foster Peabody, after whom the Peabody Awards are named, and an earlier George Peabody, a New England merchant who made a fortune in trans-Atlantic trade. He died in 1869, directing in his will that his estate be distributed over a period of time to promote public education in the South. UGA received $40,000 from that estate and constructed a home for the School of Education in 1913, naming it Peabody Hall.
