Strategy + Best Practices

UGA’s social media strategy emphasizes thoughtful storytelling, brand consistency, and audience engagement through best practices, data-driven insights, and ongoing adaptation to evolving digital trends.

Our approach to social media is comprehensive and built on best practices in the industry. Social media platforms are constantly evolving as are the needs of our audiences, so we must be nimble and creative in our approach to digital storytelling and content creation. We encourage bookmarking a resource like Hootsuite’s “Social Media Trends” report and familiarizing yourself with these insights. This resource, and others like it, are updated annually and will ensure you are on top of platform and algorithm changes

  1. Tell the UGA Story: Deliver engaging, high-quality content to our followers to both entertain and inform about our commitment to our Bulldog family and the state of Georgia.
  2. Grow and Protect the Brand: Build awareness of the UGA brand through engagement efforts and visual and tone consistency while participating in the social conversation surrounding the University of Georgia.
  3. Manage Our Digital Footprint: Support social media managers across campus and advise on maintaining UGA-affiliated social account creation. Offer resources for best practices and cross-campus collaboration on our social channels.

We are happy to consult on social media strategy for units or campaigns; just email the UGA social team.

Fine-tune the 4 best practices

Know Your Audience

Identify your target audience and which platform is best to reach them. Consider the types of posts, best time of day, and tone/voice for sharing content with this audience. Do not feel obligated to be on every platform. Focus on the one(s) that serve your goals and audience.

Always Include a Visual

Posts with a visual, be it a photo or video, perform better and receive more engagement than posts without a visual.

Track Your Data

If you are going to invest in social media, it’s important that you track your data and measure your success. Whether you’re exporting your data and reviewing it manually in Excel or tracking it on a social media management site (like Sprout Social or Hootsuite), it’s essential that you review follower growth, post impressions and engagement data and adjust your content strategy accordingly. If you want to learn more about our approach to data tracking and analysis, email Sarah Smith, marketing and communications analyst.

Establish a Routine

Consistency is key. Although many social media mangers have other duties, it’s important to make time to post regularly, respond to direct messages, and engage with your audience. If you are unable to find content to post or the time to post consistently you should consider a different tactic for communicating with your target audience.
